Introduction / History

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Bare had a close association with the Werekena. Together, they were put in a state of virtual slavery by Spanish and Portuguese authorities and merchants. They moved to river headwaters to escape the Europeans. Today, the Bare of Venezuela live in the Amazonas state, the country’s state with the highest proportion of indigenous people. They live along or near the River Casiquiare. Bare also live in Brazil and Colombia.
