Introduction

As descendants of Malaysian Muslims, the Pattani Malay have a distinct identity in Buddhist Thailand. Their location is a cultural intersection between the Muslim Malay cultures to the south and the Buddhist Thai cultures to the north. Their distinction as Muslims in a Buddhist country has led to many separatist movements, sometimes with violence, against the Thai government.
