Introduction / History

The Awngi language is spoken by the Awi people, who live mainly in the Awi Zone in the Amhara Region but also in the Dangur District of Metekel Zone of Benishangul Gumuz Region and in the Q'uara and Alefa Districts of the North Gonder Zone of Amhara Region in Northern Ethiopia. The North Gonder Zone Awis have previously been called Kunfäl.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Awis are predominantly farmers (using a plow) and very similar in culture to Amharas. The North Gonder Zone Awis, however, are very different in culture to the rest of the group. There are three subgroups: the Awigna, the Himtigna and the Kimantigna.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Awis are strongly Ethiopian Orthodox Christians and very resistant to any form of Protestant Christianity. The Awi people accepted Orthodox Christianity hundreds of years ago.

What Are Their Needs?

Awis need a strong commitment to Jesus Christ that will only come with revival.

Prayer Points

Pray for the Holy Spirit to move mightily in Awi churches, drawing them near to the Lord.
Pray that spiritual revival will lead many Awi people to take Christ to the many unreached peoples in Ethiopia.
Pray that soon Awi disciples will make more disciples.
