Tringgus in Malaysia

Introduction / History

They live in Sarawak, Malaysia, in the Tringgus area of Padawan, near the border with Kalimantan, Indonesia. They are part of the larger Bidayuh ethnic cluster. Their language is Tringgus-Sembaan Bidayuh.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Tringgus families are extended. All generations live close to one another, though they might not live under the same roof. Elders make the most important decisions for families. Everyone must marry within the Tringgus community.

They are subsistence farmers, but most also grow and sell cash crops. Rubber and pepper grow well in their area. They tap rubber trees and sell what they find. Their food comes from family farms, hunting, and fishing.

Families work together during times of harvest. When the harvest is complete, they celebrate with music, dancing, and feasting. Oral storytelling is part of the celebration, though it is common throughout the year, not just at festivals.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Though there is a sizable Christian minority, most are animistic. They worship ancestral spirits and look to the spirit world for protection and help.

What Are Their Needs?

Tringgus families can easily lose their land, which is their livelihood. Nearby logging activities threaten their farms with soil erosion and floods. Those who live in remote areas cannot access needed services like medical care.

Pray for them to understand that only the King of kings can protect them.
Pray for the Holy Spirit to move in their families and churches, drawing hundreds to put all their faith in Jesus Christ.
Pray that soon Tringgus disciples will make more disciples.
