Introduction / History

The Tumbuka or Phoka is a small group of people originally from around the Nyika Plateau of the northern Malawi.

Currently, they have spread to Zambia, but they are mostly found between the Nkhamanga Kingdom of Rumphi on the south, Tonga on the east and Ngonde on the North. They also live in Zambia.

What Are Their Lives Like?

Basically they are a quiet people who depend on subsistence farming and hunting.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Originally, they believed mostly in magic and witchcraft, but with the coming of civilization, that has changed. Today, many are Christians. They have a complete Bible and a wide range of biblical materials.

What Are Their Needs?

Like most people in Malawi, the Tumbukas, need more medical facilities.
