Introduction

The word Karan comes from the word meaning scribe which was their traditional work. The Karan Kayastha live not only in Bangladesh but also in India. A small number live in Nepal. The Karan allow divorce and remarriage, but divorce is not allowed unless the wife cannot have children. Widowers can marry again. Many are landowners. Most have a good education so they have opportunities to work in government and private service. Some are self-employed.

Bangladesh is a Muslim-majority country with a Hindu minority. The Karan are a Hindu people who have very little gospel witness.
