Valluvan in India

Valluvan in India

The Valluvan, traditionally Hindu priests, reside in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala and Pondicherry. In Tamil Nadu, they predominantly live in villages. Due to their esteemed status, Valluvan males begin wearing the sacred thread at age twelve. The Valluvan are usually landless. While some continue in priestly roles, many have ventured into other occupations, such as business and trade. The Valluvan value education, prioritizing it for boys and, to a lesser extent, for girls. Their marriage customs include cross-cousin marriages, and they do not permit widows to remarry.

Ministry Obstacles

As Hindu priests, the Valluvan are heavily committed to the Hindu religious system.
