The Dutch speak Dutch, a Germanic language which defines them as a people. They are from the Netherlands, made up of 12 provinces, two of which carry the name Holland.

The Dutch urbanized sooner than other ethnic groups in Europe. Though the Netherlands is small in land mass, it has a long history as a maritime and colonial power. The Dutch had important colonial holdings in Indonesia, South Africa, Suriname, and Aruba, thus influencing three continents.

For many reasons, the Dutch have settled in 30 countries, including South Africa, a nation they once colonized in the 1600s.
